About Us
From a backroom library to a movement
Abantu Literacy League is an advocacy non-profit organisation based in the township of Orange Farm, with a clear vision for community development.
Established on 16 June 2024 by like-minded young people who wanted to become catalysts for positive change, our organisation is centred around literacy and education activism — with the purpose of eradicating illiteracy in disadvantaged communities through practical action.
We advocate for access to information, education and people development. As an organisation, we strive to give our community access to library services and an enabling environment that promotes learning and self-development, through free after-school tutoring, a bookclub, a visual arts club and a library.
In two years, Abantu Literacy League has significantly and positively influenced young people, and continues to inspire — through competitions such as the Youth Drawing Competition, essay writing competitions and spelling bees. It was founded by Sihle Gaba, Nobuhle Nkambule, Nomathemba Sibeko, Nelisiwe Zwane, Senelisiwe Zwane and Dumezweni Ndweni.
Legacy and Vision
Abantu Literacy League began as a backroom library, then grew into a movement addressing crucial community needs — particularly access to information. Through Read Academy SA, Itataise Visual Arts Club and Bookamoso Bookclub, we are working toward becoming the epicentre of knowledge and the arts in Orange Farm.
Our Objectives
- - Promote literacy and education in disadvantaged communities.
- - Become a knowledge hub, collaborating with schools, libraries and other like-minded people and groups.
- - Encourage lifelong learning and personal development by making information accessible to the community.
